From the bestselling authors of Wittgenstein's Pokerthe quarrel that shocked the Wittgensteins Poker Rousseaus Dog A Tale Of Two Philosophers of Enlightenment. Jean-Jacques Rousseau - philosopher, novelist, composer, educationist, political provocateur - was on the run. He was fleeing intolerance, persecution, and enemies who proclaimed him a madman, dangerous to society. David Hume, the foremost philosopher in the English language, universally praised as a model of decency, came to his aid. He brought Rousseau and his beloved little dog Sultan to England. And then it all went horribly wrong. In Rousseau's DogDavid Edmonds and John Eidinow bring their narrative verve to the bitter quarrel that turned these two Enlightenment giants into mortal foes. The result is a story of celebrity and its price, of shameless spin, of destroyed reputations and shattered friendships. It is a story of two men whose writings would forever shape our world, but whose personalities and ideas could scarcely have had less in common. And it is a very human story of compassion, treachery, anger and revenge. Satın alma seçenekleri ve eklentiler. Bu ürünle ilgili bir sorun bildirin. Ürün ayrıntılarının önceki slaydı. And that would be quite accurate. It's somewhat disconcerting to read about the foibles of two Great Minds and realize that you wouldn't want to be stuck in a stalled elevator with either one of them. On the other hand, this is a fascinating look into the affairs sometimes literally The famous spat between Rousseau and Hume took place at a time when all of the important thinkers, writers, and authors in Europe knew one another and communicated regularly and voluminously. This is even more notable because so many of the classic big names in philosophy and literature were citizens of that Republic of Letters. The interplay among these notables, all of whom had sizable egos, is what makes this book so interesting. Edmonds and Eidinow seem to specialize in recounting disputes between notable people, and that's what they do here. In reality, the dispute between Rousseau and Hume came about because Rousseau had a paranoid meltdown, and Hume reacted in an completely disproportionate manner. But in the hands of Edmonds and Eidinow, it serves as a way to recreate a lost world-- The Republic of Letters-- and to make that world real. So, the reviewers who criticize the book as nothing more than petty gossip are right, but they are missing the point. The functioning of The Republic of Letters is in reality the main character and the point of this book. It is well worth reading. Bildir Yorumu Türkçe'ye çevir. Using the same formula the authors had with "Wittgenstein's Poker", this book is an excellent popular work of intellectual history. Using a single incident for the jumping off point, it allows for an opening for a broad view of Enlightenment society and the state of philosophy in that era.
